Missing Targets

Have you ever "missed the target"?

If you have, well, you're not alone. Even if you practice tons, eventually, missing always happens from time to time. The same is true of our spiritual lives. In Romans 3:23, God tell us through His word, "for all have sinned and fall short of God's glory".

That's you, that's me, that's everyone. Sin can be better understood as an archery term meaning to miss the mark. So God has a target for everyone to hit, but it's impossible for us to hit the bull’s-eye each day of our lives.

Missing the mark will cost us everything

Romans 6:23 tells of the consequences of missing God's target. It is the separation from God and all of His wonderful goodness forever. That's really bad! It's also known as death! That's bad too!

Jesus never missed the target!

Hebrews 4:15 (paraphrased from NIV) says, Jesus is able to sympathize with our weakness because He was tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin.

Jesus understands our struggle with temptation, but unlike us, Jesus never missed! Not once in His 33 years.

Jesus takes your place

2 Corinthians 5:21 - God made Him who had no sin to be a sin offering for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Let me explain. The cost for missing the mark (sin) is separation from God forever (death). Jesus never missed the mark and still paid the cost for sin (death by the cross). So, who's sin cost Jesus His life?

Mine, yours, and the rest of the world. He became our substitute in His death. Because death could not keep Him dead, the cost of missing the target can be avoided if we let Jesus hit the bull’s-eye for us. We need Him!

Jesus loves those who miss

Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Let Jesus' love have power over your inability to hit the target!

John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Simply pray to God and tell Him something like this...I know that I can't hit your target...and the penalty for missing it, is death...I'm in trouble and need your help...I know that your Son, Jesus Christ never missed...He died on a cross for me...and death could not keep Him dead...I believe Jesus can forgive me for all the times I missed and messed up...I gladly receive His forgiveness and turn the controls of my life over to His leadership...I ask for Him to send His Holy Spirit to come inside of me and be my guide for the rest of my life. Thank you Jesus for saving me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
